SUMMARY:Faith in a Time of Genocide: The Kairos II Document and Implications for Reformed Christians
DESCRIPTION:The Reformed Church Center extended its program year last June to share important information from the Persian Gulf and the Levant in a program co-sponsored by the Al Amana Center in Oman; if you missed this discussion\, you can find it at https://nbts.edu/events/caught-israel-iran-usa/. As we begin a new academic year\, the situation shows little sign of improving\, and the issues continue to be layered and complex. Our first program of 2026-2027 focuses more specifically on Israel and Palestine. \nThe attacks by the terrorist group Hamas on October 7\, 2023—almost three years ago—served as a pretext for increased warfare by Israel’s government on all the citizens of Palestine. On November 14\, 2025\, the Palestinian Christian Ecumenical Initiative issued the Kairos II document (https://www.sabeel-kairos.org.uk/new-kairos-ii-faith-in-a-time-of-genocide/)\, which condemns what is going on as a genocide which most of the nations of the world are ignoring\, affirms the sanctity of life and our duty to care for creation as well as protecting the vulnerable in society\, and calls on all Christians to stand with the church in Palestine. \nOn Thursday\, September 17\, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm Eastern Time\, the Reformed Church Center will host and online discussion of these issues\, featuring leading Christian voices from Palestine and North America. “Faith in a Time of Genocide: the Kairos II Document and Implications for Reformed Christians” will help all participants\, not just the Reformed ones\, to get a better understanding of the issues raised by the Kairos II document and how churches at local and denominational levels can better support our siblings in Palestine. \n  \nLike all Reformed Church Center programs\, this webinar is free and open to the public\, but all participants must register. \n  \nBorn and raised in Jerusalem\, Philip Farah is a Palestinian who came to the US in 1978. He has lived and worked in several Arab countries. A founding member of the Palestinian Christian Alliance for Peace\, Dr. Farah has spoken widely on West Asia justice issues\, and his writings have appeared in several publications. Philip has relatives in Gaza who were among the victims of Israel’s genocidal war. He recently retired after a thirty-five-year career as a public sector economist. \nRifat Kassis founded Defence for Children International Palestine and co-founded the Alternative Tourism Group\, served as Executive Director of YMCA and founded the YMCA/YWCA Olive Tree Campaign. He ran the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel and served as the country director of the Lutheran World Federation in Jordan. He is one of the co-authors of Kairos Palestine document and the General Coordinator of its global coalition. He has published two books and contributed to seventeen others. \nMarietta Macy is a Christian educator and a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She has served on the Steering Committee of the Palestine Justice Network of the PC(USA) for over thirteen years\, including seven as Co-Moderator. Having grown up on a farm\, she finds a shared language of kinship with the land with Palestinian farmers which has greatly shaped her theology of creation and our place in it. \nA retired Religious Studies and Philosophy professor and founder of the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace\, Michael Spath is also a board member of ICAHD-USA and Friends of Hebron. He has served as a Kairos USA staffer\, Board Co-Chair of FOSNA\, and a Pilgrims of Ibillin board member\, and was a founder of the United Church of Christ Palestine-Israel Network—now Movement for Palestinian Solidarity \n
