Rev. Dr. Charles M. Rix Appointed Dean of New Brunswick Theological Seminary
June 20, 2025
New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS) is proud to announce that Rev. Dr. Charles M. Rix has been appointed Dean of the Seminary, effective July 1, 2025. This appointment follows a year of transformative leadership as Interim Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs, during which Dr. Rix guided the seminary through major academic and strategic initiatives that position NBTS for a bold and faithful future.
An alumnus of NBTS (M.Div. 2003) and former adjunct faculty member (2006–2011), Dr. Rix returned to the seminary in 2023 as Director of the Master of Arts programs. In this role—and later as Interim Dean—he has brought vision, collaborative spirit, and a passion for innovation in theological education.
During his tenure, Dr. Rix led the development of two new graduate-level microcredential programs: Spiritual Care and Wellness and Justice and Inclusion launching in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 respectively. These focused, skill-based academic offerings will expand NBTS’s ability to serve churches, community leaders, and ministry practitioners seeking relevant and flexible theological training.
Under Dr. Rix’s leadership, NBTS also secured a $50,000 planning grant to explore and build a comprehensive microcredentialing initiative. This work laid the foundation for completing a $1 million implementation grant proposal and reflects the seminary’s commitment to equipping leaders for ministry that is adaptive, sustainable, and deeply engaged with community needs.
Additional highlights of Dr. Rix’s contributions include:
- Development of the Master of Arts in Theological and Ministry Studies (MATMS)
- Supervision of MA student theses and academic progress (8 graduates in Spring of 2025)
- Oversight of ATS accreditation reporting
- Coordination of NBTS’s new Queens Reformed Church satellite campus, launching Fall 2025
- Strategic collaboration with Seminary leadership on administrative planning and innovation
“Dr. Rix’s leadership this past year has been extraordinary,” said NBTS President Rev. Dr. Micah L. McCreary. “He brings both academic depth and a visionary approach to institutional growth. His promotion to Dean is a recognition of his remarkable work and a signal of our commitment to preparing students for ministry in a complex and changing world.”
Please join us in congratulating Rev. Dr. Charles Rix on this next chapter in his ministry with NBTS. We look forward to all that lies ahead under his leadership.
