Learn about Islam in Muscat, Oman!
September 28, 2022
New Brunswick Theological Seminary, in cooperation with the Al Amana Center for Christian- Muslim Dialogue in Muscat, Oman, is seeking up to twenty members of the NBTS community for a ten-day immersion experience in Oman. The cost of the stay in Oman is $2,000. This includes your expenses while on the ground including travel within Oman, accommodations, and food. Your airfare to/from Oman is in addition to this cost.
The NBTS Center for Global Education, through a gracious donation from the Thomas family, will provide scholarships for up to ten current students (and graduates from the class of 2020, 2021, or 2022 who wish to participate) for up to $1,000 per student. Airfare is the responsibility of each participant (in the past the cost has been between $850- $1500/person-roundtrip). We will offer a 3-credit Masters/Doctoral elective course connected with the trip, and for those who register, an additional $300 scholarship will be provided for the cost of that class.
We invite you to consider this immersion experience, which is scheduled to depart United States on January 5/6, 2023, and return on January 15, 2023 (schedule tentative, subject to changes). The Omani experience will begin on January 7th and conclude on the evening of January 15th.
If you are interested, please fill out an interest form or contact Dr. James Jinhong Kim at underwoodcenter@nbts.edu by September 21st.
In order for the travel experience to take place, all registration materials will need to be submitted by October 30th together with a deposit of $500. Students will be given priority in this once in a lifetime opportunity, with faculty, staff, and alumni invited upon availability of space. For additional questions, please email: underwoodcenter@nbts.edu.
The nine-day experience will include dialogue with Muslim students, an introduction to Islamic theological studies, as well travel in and around Muscat. Oman is considered by many to be one of the most stable of all Middle Eastern countries, practicing a very irenic form of Islam that encourages dialogue and understanding.
For additional information, please contact NBTS alum Kimberly Trinidad, who took part in the program in January of 2017 and 2020. The late Rev. Franco Juricic, who also traveled Oman through this program, called the experience “life changing!”
